If you have the option to run virtual machines which people connect toĬheap and simple, might work well for students who need a dorm PC but don't want to leave a laptop. You may or may not use this feature, but I think it could be important for big business.

Annoyingly Microsoft's usually excellent Android RDP app doesn't work on DeX Station (yet) which was a shame because I'd like to have tried using my Windows 10 Pro machine with it. There several options that are supported in Android, but I was only able to fully test with Amazon. You can use any local machine and connect to it using another "remote desktop" style app. Not unless they used it, upon which time they would detect the abysmal lag and know something was up.īut, Amazon isn't the only solution here.

The Amazon app allows you to run full screen, which makes it feel like you're running Windows. The Amazon app that allows you to do this is monstrously unclear about how you're supposed to make it work, but I did eventually get it going reasonably well. It's not handled badly, but at the same time it might frustrate people. Many of those are designed only for a touchscreen, so you can't run them on the DeX and you get a message to that effect. Instagram has no tablet app - that's right folks, it's 2017 and no tablet app - so it makes sense that it runs abysmally. On the other hand, WhatsApp and Google Maps and Gmail all run in what I assume is a "tablet" mode. Instagram, the notoriously hopeless and inflexible app that forces photos into the most illogical UI design ever, runs only in "tall and thin" portrait mode. The only major moan I could have is that a lot of Android apps won't run at all, or will run as if they are on a phone. This makes a lot of sense to me, but I suspect users might be sort of confused by it. So a freshly rebooted S8 will have nothing, while one that has been running a long time will perhaps have a full bar. In general I found this was quite common.Īpps that are "running" on the phone will be shown on the taskbar at the bottom. WhatsApp for example, allows you to write a message while connected and then pull it out of the dock to send. But in fact, a great deal of apps work fine if you start something on the DeX, then switch to phone mode. Now, Samsung warns that putting the phone in the dock, or removing it, will reset apps so you'd lose things you were working on.
